Waiting for Columbus is the first live album by the band Little Feat, recorded during seven performances in 1977. The first four shows were held at the Rainbow Theatre in London on August 1–4, 1977. The final three shows were recorded the following week at George Washington University's Lisner Auditorium in Washington, D.C. on August 8–10. Local Washington radio personality Don 'Cerphe' Colwell can be heard leading the audience in a 'F-E-A-T' spellout in between the first ('Join the Band') and second ('Fat Man in the Bathtub') tracks.

The band were backed by the Tower of Powerhorn section with whom they had recorded for their 1974 album Feats Don't Fail Me Now.^[4] The result was one of their biggest selling albums.

Many of their more well-known songs were either re-worked or extended. For instance, one of their signature songs, 'Dixie Chicken', was heavily extended to include a lengthy piano solo by keyboardist Bill Payne, a Dixieland horn arrangement and finally a dual guitar jam between the band's two guitarists, Lowell George and Paul Barrère. In some cases, songs such as 'Rocket in My Pocket' and 'Mercenary Territory' were re-worked to include the horn section, and Little Feat additionally covered such tunes as Fraternity of Man's 'Don't Bogart That Joint' and Allen Toussaint's 'On Your Way Down' (which had also appeared on 1973's Dixie Chicken album). Former Rolling Stones guitarist Mick Taylor makes a guest appearance playing slide guitar on 'A Apolitical Blues'.

The band recorded and mixed enough material from these performances for a triple LP, but for marketing reasons kept it to a double album. Three of the unused tracks were included on their 1981 album Hoy-Hoy!. All were eventually released on the 2002 'Deluxe edition' CD.

It was voted number 804 in the third edition of Colin Larkin's All Time Top 1000 Albums (2000).^[5]

The cover art, by Neon Park,^[6] depicts items from the Americas unknown to Europeans before Columbus: an anthropomorphic tomato on a hammock in front of a backdrop of American native foliage and cactus.

There have been two different half-speed mastered vinyl reissues on LP, both on the Mobile Fidelity label and containing the original full track list. The first reissue was released not long after the original Warner Brothers LP, was mastered by Stan Ricker, MFSL 2-013, and pressed by JVC in Japan. The other is a 2011 release on 180g vinyl on Warner Brothers Records and mastered by Shawn R. Britton.^{[citation needed]}

So many other historical events have been made into slot games, that it is surprising that Christopher Columbus has not been a more popular title. With the exception of the original Columbus slot from Novomatic, I believe this is the only game featuring his epic voyage. This slot does mimic the original mechanical games from land-based casinos, judging by the look and feel of the game.

At the same time as keeping the mechanical roots in mind, the graphics have obviously been the subject of a lot of attention. Many of the items are animated. For me the smile and turn of the head of the Queen in this game has a sinister edge to it. Then again, maybe I have watched too many TV thrillers. Christopher himself comes to life, and his trusty compass is also involved. Most of the sounds are mechanical or early electronic slot noises from the Novomatic library. These are interspersed with some epic sounding trumpet calls and short quasi-classical tunes. They do help bring things to life, though the mechanical sounds and theme do not gel too well together for me.

There is only one interesting feature on this game – a free spins round. This moves the voyage of the Mayflower from day to evening, and can be retriggered. There are no advanced or flashy games involved with this slot. What it does do is a great job of recreating the early mechanical 5 reel slot games from live casinos and putting the result online.

You will find 5 reels, 3 rows of symbols and 10 pay lines on this game. The minimum coin value is 4c, and the maximum $10, giving you a spin amount of 40c through to $100 for all the lines. You can choose auto-play for up to 50 lines. Like with all Novomatic slots, you get to choose whether to gamble after a win, or collect. On this game the gamble is on the turn of a playing card (black / red).

The top paying symbol is Christopher himself. This is worth 500 times your coin bet for 5 and 100 for 4. Columbus is also wild, substituting for anything except the scatter. A jewelled necklace and the ships compass are the next unique symbols. There are also playing cards, ace down to 10, which add a lot of small wins in this game.

Scatter and bonus symbols are represented by the Mayflower, which appears from different angles. This appears with a jarring sound, though if you do get 3 of them you will trigger the bonus round.

Columbus Deluxe

As is often the case with Novomatic, this is a beautifully produced online casino slot, though the game itself is very simple. This is certainly a step up from the original Columbus slot in terms of graphics and smoothness of the play. Whether it really offers enough to keep people coming back for more in today’s crowded slots arena I am not so sure. At least it gives you a chance to play a game outside of the usual historical subjects of ancient Egypt or Rome.

This one is worth a spin if you enjoy the low intensity old style games, and can appreciate a well-produced slot when you see one.
